From outrageous fugues to murderous madrigals, Houston’s dynamic chamber ensemble, KINETIC, closes their 2017-18 season with "Musical Madness," a daring and eclectic program that spans four centuries and includes two premieres.
Centering on the famously shocking Grosse Fuge, one of Beethoven’s last works, “Musical Madness” explores the nature of passion and obsession in the works of six composers between the Renaissance and the present day. The program also connects us to our rich musical lineage, with composers drawing inspiration from the past: Contemporary Argentinian Osvaldo Golijov recalls the ghost of Piazzolla in the tango-infused Last Round; Estonian Erkki-Sven Tüür pays homage to the alarmingly progressive music of Carlo Gesualdo in his haunting L’ombra della croce – which will be a U.S. Premiere – and KINETIC’s own violinist-composer, Giancarlo Latta will offer a direct response to Beethoven’s Grosse Fuge in his new work, written specially for KINETIC.
