The Jazz Houston Orchestra celebrates the music of John Birks “Dizzy” Gillespie, the creator of Bebop, and that of those he influenced. The guest artist will be trumpeter Jon Faddis, who was Gillespie’s protégé as a teenager and one of the foremost interpreters of his music. Additionally, there will be a performance of a little-known composition by Tadd Dameron entitled “Casbah,” in which the Jazz Houston Orchestra is joined by a Houston Grand Opera Soprano. An education program entitled “Who Is Dizzy Gillespie” will be presented in conjunction with this concert.
