Exploiting the uncanny resemblance in the melody structure of Scottish folk songs and Indian classical ragas, Zakir Hussain brings together Indian and Celtic musicians in a show highlighting the common thread. The Scotland Council of the Arts commissioned Zakir Hussain in 2011 to bring together Indian and Celtic musicians in a residency culminating in a grand concert. The success of this performance inspired the UK Council of the Arts to ask the group to perform at the pre-Olympic in London in 2012 to an audience of 10,000.
The Celtic Connections ensemble of nine includes Zakir Hussain (Tabla), Fraser Fifield (Flute/Pipes), Rakesh Chaurasia (Bamboo Flute), Jean-Michel Veillon (Flute), Ganesh Rajgopalan (Violin), Charlie McKerron (Fiddle), Patsy Reid (Fiddle), Matheu Watson (Guitar) and John Joe Kelly (Bodhran).
