Houston Pride Band presents "It's A Woman's World"

eventdetail

The Houston Pride Band, in partnership with AssistHers, will present a musical tribute to women. Despite the increased presence of women on the mainstream classical music scene in the past 100 years, the roles of composer and conductor are still overwhelmingly occupied by men. In the past, the inability to obtain formal music education, social attitudes concerning a woman's place in society, and the resulting lack of self-confidence emanating from those beliefs have stood in the way of women interested in a career in music.

As social conventions towards women began shifting in the mid-twentieth century, a new wave of female musicians began breaking down music's gender barriers, slowly joining the ranks of today's musical elite. While their accomplishments and skills are many, they still have a way to go to conquer the traditionally male-dominated world of classical music.

The performance will contain a number of surprises, including tributes to some of the world's greatest female poets, recognition of the numerous accomplishments of the wonderful female musicians of the Houston Pride Band and more.

Featured musical ensembles include SaxWorx and Shimmer Flute Choir. The performance will be emceed by Nancy Ford, followed by a reception with members of the band.
