Some Light Emerges celebrates the indelible impact of the Rothko Chapel, a Houston institution with international reach. Created by the artist Mark Rothko and commissioned by two of Houston’s greatest philanthropic leaders, John and Dominique de Menil, the chapel is beloved as an ecumenical sanctuary, an international rallying place for human rights, and as a testament to the power of art.

This chamber opera, composed by Laura Kaminsky to a libretto by Mark Campbell and Kimberly Reed, weaves together the storylines of five individual Houstonians who find their own personal meaning from visiting the space.

Some Light Emerges is being developed in close collaboration with the Rothko Chapel and The Menil Collection. Don’t miss this unique musical celebration of Houston’s social history, rich visual arts, and diversity of faith and spirituality.
