Hooks-Epstein Galleries presents a solo exhibition for mixed media, photography-based artist Kathryn Dunlevie, "Femmes Futuristes."
Dunlevie has always been intrigued by spatial and temporal inconsistencies, and by each individual’s particular and shifting sense of what is real. Fragmenting, reassembling, and layering images, she suggests the fluidity of space and time and the complex psychologies of the entities she portrays.
"Femmes Futuristes" is an exhibition of photography-based collages, each of which depicts the silhouette of a person composed of fragmented images. The images are pieced together from a familiar, shared visual history and relocated to various settings from Dunlevie’s photographic archives. The collaged interiors of these figures, who are often depicted stepping in a forward momentum, impart a sense of power and purpose, while the open-ended panoramas evoke the prospect of unique possibilities.
Regardless of how one identifies, Dunlevie hopes to inspire viewers to expel feelings of limitation and to embrace a transformation of the self, where qualities and attitudes are chosen freely, independent of societal norms and pressures.
The exhibition will remain on display through May 6.
