In the main gallery, recent watercolor monotypes from printmaker Jonathan Higgins explore the balance between the rigidity of a system and the organic nature of material and impulse. Higgins, who runs Manneken Press in Bloomington, Illinois, expanded his palette from gray tones to washes of color in his first solo exhibition in Houston. Higgins' work beautifully complements abstract geometric forms and figures from the traditional tribes of Sub-Saharan Africa.
In the small gallery, several Chi Wara pairs from the Bamana people of Mali highlight the selection of antique African art. Ron Adams' print Blackburn, which is in several major museum collections such as the Smithsonian, the Spencer Museum of Art and the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, will also be on view in the small gallery.
On view through Nov. 22.
