For this year's Murfee Worsham screening, Rice Cinema offers Rome Open City, a foundational film for Italian Neorealism and all of postwar European cinema. In Nazi occupied Rome, a resistance fighter takes refuge in the home of a young engaged couple, and tragedy ensues. Featuring a towering performance by Anna Mangnani, with a screenplay by the young Federico Fellini, the film presents life in wartime Rome as it is, sullied and melodramatic.
