For the finale of its 25th Anniversary season, Da Camera presents the world premiere of Sarah Rothenberg's In the Garden of Dreams. The worlds of music, art, theater and ideas meet in this new Da Camera production that reunites the creative team of Rothenberg's critically-acclaimed The Blue Rider, which was called "Fascinating....incandescent" by The New York Times.
In the Garden of Dreams explores the fantastic obsession with dreams and the unconscious in the music, visual art, psychology and theater of Vienna circa 1900. The creative team intertwines intimate solo piano and vocal works of Johannes Brahms and Arnold Schoenberg with theatrical lighting and projections. The script, sound collage and imagery draw on Freud's The Interpretation of Dreams, Strindberg's A Dream Play, Max Klinger's Brahms-Phantasie and the erotic paintings of Gustav Klimt.
In the Garden of Dreams moves from dawn (late 19th century) to the dark of night (1910), from a protected Viennese interior to a decaying landscape where Schoenberg's haunting monodrama, The Book of the Hanging Gardens, reaches its shattering conclusion as reality, dream, memory and hallucination merge in the mind of an obsessed lover.
The creative team includes Sarah Rothenberg, piano; Charlotte Hellekant, mezzo soprano; Michael Sumuel, bass baritone; Marcus Doshi, set, lighting; and Sven Ortel, imagery and projections.
