Completing the cycle of string quartets composed by Dmitri Shostakovich, a historic first for Houston embarked on in the fall 2012 and continued in 2013, the world-renowned Jerusalem String Quartet returns to perform the Russian composer's three final quartets in a sold-out concert at Rothko Chapel.
A highpoint of Da Camera's season-long exploration of late style comes in this program that brings together musical and visual art masterpieces from the 1970s. Mark Rothko's monumental final paintings form an evocative setting for Shostakovich's final quartets. Both artists, in their late style, turned to a dark palette and produced profound works — deep in meaning and intimate in content.
