Mani Kaul continues his interest in cinema between fiction and documentary with this magnificently shot feature about the Hindustani musician Siddheshwari Devi (1903-77), a singer in the classical Thumri tradition. The film is structured like a Thumri piece: It presents key motifs (of his life as well as of myths and locations) and elaborates on and around them with different songs, moods and camera movements until the whole becomes a moving tapestry celebrating the transfiguration of life into music.

Shot in color and monochrome, the film proceeds by means of metaphors, evoked rather than named. The intoxicants mandatory to the euphoria of a (sexual) meeting are contrasted with the labor that went into practicing the difficult art of music.

A reception begins at 7 p.m.; the film screening begins at 8 p.m.
