Rangbhoomi follows Kamal Swaroop as he attempts to trace the contours of the life of DG Phalke (popularly recognized as the Father of Indian cinema) in Benaras (Varanasi) after he withdrew, disillusioned from the world of cinema and having decided to take up theater. While in Varanasi, Phalke wrote a semi-autobiographical play titled Rangbhoomi, which forms the core of this cinematic exploration.

The film intertwines director Swaroop's personal engagement in the story of Phalke with Phalke's journey and the play, deploying a vibrant palette of sounds, sights and characters in a surrealistic juxtaposition. The film premiered at the Rome Film Festival.
