The foster care system is failing Black and Brown children, and the death of Ma’Khia Bryant is just one of many examples. The Center for the Healing of Racism will host a presentation about Racism in Foster Care by Alan Dettlaff, Dean of the University of Houston Graduate School of Social Work. A facilitated dialogue will follow the presentation.
Dr. Dettlaff’s work focuses on addressing and eliminating the impact of structural and institutional racism on Black children and other children of color involved in the child welfare system. Prior to entering academia, Dr. Dettlaff worked in the child welfare system as a caseworker and an administrator, where he specialized in investigations of maltreatment.
