For nearly 20 years, Virginia-based filmmaker Kevin Jerome Everson has been making lyrical, poetic films and videos that explore the multifaceted life-world of African Americans. Everson's gift is his ability to explore seemingly simple experiences in their infinite complexity, as well as to break difficult, layered histories down into component parts.
His newest feature is an experimental documentary regarding a catastrophic flood in Westport, Mississippi, in 1973, its continuing resonance and the attempts at retrieving memories lost to time and tide. He will also discuss his working methods and screen some brand new short works.
This free screening is presented by Blaffer On Screen, a film and video series committed to bringing some of the world's leading film and media artists to Blaffer Art Museum's audience, the University of Houston community and the City of Houston.
