Villa Albertine in Texas, along with the Blaffer Art Museum, will present "Computers as Weaving," a conversation between designer Mukhtara Ayọtẹjú Adékúnbi Yusuf, a quilter from The Jubilee Quilt Circle, and Villa Albertine resident and French visual artist Diane Cescutti, as she will be concluding her two-month residency program spent in Houston and Marfa.
How do textile objects, practices and metaphors help us nourish new imaginaries about outer spaces and virtual spaces? The talk will reflect on the contribution of soft, indigenous and textile knowledges to the very real computer history and technologies development, taking into example the way softness and soft engineering contributed to the development of the spacesuit and soft goods at NASA.
The discussion will dive into Cescutti’s current research Worlding Marfa during her Villa Albertine residency in Houston and Marfa, and conclude with a panel talk between the three artists on how textile as coded artifacts nourish imaginaries for new relationships to technologies, outer spaces and virtual spaces.
