American Realist painter Barkley L. Hendricks's first career retrospective has arrived in Houston. 

Birth of the Cool features Hendricks's famous life-size portraits and nudes as well as his landscapes of Jamaica and early works. The CAMH show adds to the traveling exhibit with works from Walkin' With Walker: Narrative Photography of Barkley L. Hendricks, referencing Hendricks's studies under legendary photographer Walker Evans. 

The opening reception on Friday will feature a cash bar. On Saturday, Hendricks and curator Trevor Schoonmaker will participate in a discussion of the artist's work at 2 p.m. The exhibit opens Friday, Jan. 29, and runs through April 18.
