The music of J.S. Bach rarely finds its way onto the ballet stage, and even less when accompanied by the pipe organ. However, Bach Society Houston director Rick Erickson and New York City’s SYREN Modern Dance are about to change all that in their upcoming  performance of The Art of Fugue.

The Art of Fugue was not written for any specific instrument, but it is traditionally performed with a chamber ensemble, harpsichord, or, as Erickson will do, the organ. Joining him is New York City’s SYREN Modern Dance, an ensemble of five professional dancers whose choreography will mimic Bach’s compositions. The venue, Christ the King Lutheran Church, is the home of the magnificent Bach Organ, an instrument strictly modeled after the organs Johann Sebastian himself played, and is a space “in the round.”
