A new work for string quartet and bass-baritone, Open Source is a collaboration between composer Karl Blench and librettist Jacqui Sutton. Commissioned by the First Congregational Church of Houston and Maggie Tucker, the work is inspired by the history and the mission of the church: to serve as a place of belonging for everyone regardless of race or creed.

The Axiom Quartet will be premiering the work alongside bass-baritone Timothy Jones. To complement this new work, the Axiom Quartet will also be performing Beethoven’s String Quartet Op. 130, performed with its alternative finale: the last piece Beethoven ever wrote. Chosen by Carl Sagan to reflect the accomplishments and legacy of humanity, the “Cavatina” from this quartet was inscribed on a golden record and sent into space on the Voyager spacecraft in 1977.

The performance will be preceded by a pre-concert talk with the performers, composer Karl Blench, and First Congregational of Houston leadership.
