Parade is a solo exhibition by San Antonio artist John Hernandez. Often working on a large scale (4-by-6-feet drawings, 33-foot long installations), Hernandez creates imagery that is at its core a manifestation of '60s pop culture influences, including toys, comic books and films. Imagine walking into a room where the cartoon cat with his hair on fire has just shot a skateboarding mushroom. Freeze that image in your mind, but overlay it with bright color and psychedelic pattern and you have come close to witnessing work by Hernandez. Cartoon violence, a riot of color and a morphing carnival of shapes take Hernandez's original pen and ink drawings into full color reliefs that range and rage from the delicate and small to room sized and beyond.

On view through May 1.
