Arts District Houston will present the opening of its welcome center. Located in Winter Street Studios on the Sawyer Yards campus, several local art installations will be displayed at the center opening, including a new large scale exterior mural by David Maldonado, along with a commissioned map of the District by Kimmie Gillespie, and site-specific furniture by woodworker David Mendoza.
Featuring artwork on both the interior and exterior, the Welcome Center offers an option for Houstonians to experience art in a safe, socially distanced environment.
The new Welcome Center is roughly 230 square feet, and will feature artwork from a new local artist each month. The opening will take place during Second Saturday at Sawyer Yards, where visitors will have the chance to meet hundreds of local artists during open studio hours or at the outdoor Market at Sawyer Yards. It will serve as a destination for tourists and locals to view local artwork, engage with artists and support local small businesses. In the Center, visitors will find suggestions of places to see and things to do in the area as recommended by local artists in addition to area maps and a walking guide.
