Tango. The word evokes elegance and romance, style and grace. With origins in the working-class port neighborhoods of Buenos Aires, Argentina; and Montevideo, Uruguay — and inspired by European tempos and Afro-American rhythms — tango has come to define South American dance.
Argentina native and Houston resident Oscar Lopez-Gamundi of Baires Tango, seen at the MFAH during the Argentinean Bicentennial Celebration in May 2010, provides a pictorial talk about the evolution of tango and demonstrates the milonga, the waltz and — of course — the tango. "A Tango Journey" serves as a prelude to the exhibition Intersecting Modernities: Latin American Art from the Brillembourg Capriles Collection, opening June 23.
