Artists and media makers collaborate for a public exhibit titled Putting the 'U'in Color to challenge existing biases against "dark-skinned" individuals within the community. According to the presenters, the show aims to challenge the light-is-beautiful-and-smart stereotypes, showcase cinema's obsession with light-skin, as well as highlight the perils of skin-lightening product industry.
In addition to original artist works, found objects, media artifacts and vintage Bollywood materials will be on display. The exhibition uses a multi-disciplinary approach and draws from graphic design, video, fiction and new media. Broad-ranging techniques from old-school journalism to visual art, film-making to personal storytelling, writing to photography will be utilized.
This exhibition urges South Asian women (and men) to reevaluate the effectiveness of these products and "drop-off" their jars and bottles if they have failed to lighten their skin.
On view through Nov. 30.
