Less than two years after surviving a heart transplant, Michael Bise returns to Moody Gallery with a new body of large-scale drawings titled Love in the Kingdom of the Sick. These works explore Bise's own harrowing experience, but also work to address the larger issues of what it means to be entangled in the controversial medical and political net of illness.
Bise's new drawings also mark a significant evolution in the technique and style of his large-scale yet intimate and intricate narratives. The title references both Gabriel Garcia Marquez's novel Love in the Time of Cholera and a specific passage from Susan Sontag's book Illness as Metaphor.
