Art opening reception: The Bride Laid Bare by Rachel Harmeyer

eventdetail
Frenetic Theater

The Bride Laid Bare is an exhibition of new works by Rachel Harmeyer, a 2013 Artist Board member at Frenetic Theater. To create this series, the artist dissected a number of bridal gowns, literally and figuratively anatomizing them. Drawing from a number of wide-ranging sources — from the vanitas tradition in painting, the veneration of saintly relics to the presentation of female body in medical illustration — The Bride Laid Bare focuses on the bride as a symbol of ephemerality.

From their constituent elements and by using a combination of drawing, embroidery and bricolage techniques, Harmeyer has transformed these raw materials into anatomical specimens that explore the objectified female body and its meaning in the wedding ritual.

On view through July 21.
