Blast Furnaces - Concluding the Series is an exhibition of new work by Houston-based, Croatian-born artist Nadezda Prvulovic. Prvulovic's series of paintings depicting industrial steel furnaces began in the early 1980s, after the artist became inspired by the sight of abandoned melting cauldrons upon a visit to the steel factories in Thionville, France.

Prvulovic's distinctive painterly sensibility creates a tension between a glowing realism and deliberately flat fields of color. Her monumental gouaches on paper laid on canvas transform the heat and smoke of her imagery into forms that suggest a brooding void of human presence and at the same time evoke a romanticized vision of a past age. The works in this exhibition represent and celebrate the conclusion of this enduring vision.
