A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, the Tony Award-winning musical largely centered on gender roles and sexism, is given a fresh new take at Art Factory with an all-female cast.
Based on the farces of Plautus, the musical transports viewers to a small corner of ancient Rome, where neighbors Marcus Lycus, Erronius, and Senex live in three adjacent houses. Pseudolus, a slave belonging to Senex’s son, Hero, yearns to be free and will stop at nothing to achieve his goal. When Hero tells him that he is in love with the beautiful courtesan Philia, whom he often sees in the window of the House of Lycus, Pseudolus promises to help him win Philia’s love in exchange for his freedom.
