Anya Tish Gallery opening reception: Killing Time by Daniela Edburg

eventdetail
Anya Tish Gallery

This solo exhibition, in conjunction with the 2014 FotoFest Biennial, is the Texas debut of Houston-born, Mexico-based artist Daniela Edburg. Edburg's intricate photographs, simultaneously cerebral and visually stunning, consistently challenge the boundaries between the surreal and the commonplace. Elements of the subtly bizarre in otherwise ordinary settings call attention to the self-destructive, obsessive and ultimately beautiful nature of humankind. The photographs' dramatic mystery, vivid color and complexity of detail reveal an exaggeration of reality and incite a reconsideration of the viewers' perception.

The exhibition includes photographs from Edburg's recent series of works, all in which she creates fantastical, artificial narratives regarding the world we inhabit, and the nonsense it generates. Each scenario reveals stirring, reflecting characters and soft, fiber objects that she knits herself, adding another layer of absurdity to representation. Because Edburg creates many of the objects used in her photos, whether it be a crocheted sweater or a homemade cake, her art practice becomes all-inclusive; the photographs become the final homage to the process she constructed to get there.
