Anya Tish Gallery will present "Close Encounters," an exhibition of new works by Eduardo Portillo. Known for challenging the most fundamental component of painting - the canvas itself - the Houston-based Salvadorian artist continues to push the boundaries between painting and sculpture with his dynamic upcoming exhibition.
While still adhering to its basic tenants, Portillo stretches canvas across wood to create unique geometrical con- figurations that confront the traditional genre of painting. The interplay between peaks of tension and valleys of space creates a sculptural dimension which adds a topographic nature to the conversation. His colors are sparse and contain Ombré hues that complement the minimalistic vocabulary. Focusing on unusual structure and it’s interaction with the space around it, one may think Portillo has a reductionist attitude towards making art - on the contrary - he uses minimalism as an expansive tool. The subtle variation in hue, direction of line, and the levels within the valleys he creates are all brought to the forefront.
Following the opening reception, the exhibit will be on display through November 10.
