In Proximity, Galina Kurlat explores the intimate relationship between the camera and the subject. Using the old Polaroid positive/negative black and white film, a fragile medium that has a tendency to react to changes in temperature and humidity, Kurlat deliberately manipulates the negatives — preserving some while allowing others to degrade by not properly washing and finishing them, so that a uncontrolled serendipity dictates the final portrait.
On view through April 28.
