23rd Annual Día de los Muertos

Each year, Lawndale Art Center presents a series of events surrounding the Mexican tradition of Día de los Muertos, encouraging celebration and education of the Mexican-American community and its traditions. The featured events include an exhibition of retablos, on view Oct. 18 - Nov. 6 and a gala and silent auction of the retablos on Oct. 22. Next, a musical ofrenda on Oct. 26 features the River Oaks Chamber Orchestra and Musiqa, as well as original readings by Inprint. Crafty types will enjoy the Papel Picado Workshop on Oct. 28, in which Jean King leads a workshop on Mexican paper folding, as well as a Nov. 4 workshop on creating sugar skulls. A Family Day Fiesta finishes the series on Nov. 6 with children's activities, such as decorating sugar skulls, along with performances by Mixteco Ballet Folklorico.
