Poland, 1962. Ida, orphaned as an infant and brought up in a convent, is about to take her vows. But before she does, the mother superior wants Ida to meet Wanda, an unknown aunt. At their first meeting, Wanda tells a shocked Ida "You're Jewish." The two, pure believer (Ida) and the free-living atheist (Wanda), then embark upon a quest to discover what happened to Ida's parents — a combination road trip, detective tale and ultimate melding of black and white worlds to shades of grey.
Ida won an Oscar for Best Foreign Language film.
