The mission of the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation is to improve the quality of life for Houstonians of all ages through the power of literacy: the ability to read, write, speak clearly, and think critically. The foundation serves as a champion for the literacy cause in Houston; mobilizes volunteers to expand the capacity of school districts, libraries, and nonprofit organizations; contributes research and innovation to increase literacy development; and invests in community impact.

Connect4Literacy.org is Houston's go-to platform for those wanting to volunteer and become a point of light by working to improve literacy rates. The interactive platform allows volunteers to search for volunteer opportunities, form volunteer teams, track and print transcripts of service hours, and much more.

The annual Celebration of Reading is the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation's signature event. Hosted by the Bush family, the special evening raises funds to carry forth Barbara Bush's legacy and advance the foundation's mission. Bestselling authors and notable entertainers help to make this one of Houston's top charitable events. Since the inception of the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation, A Celebration of Reading has raised more than $2 million every year.

The Young Professionals Group (YPG) is an organization of the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation that was formed in 2014 to engage the next generation of Houston's leaders in the literacy cause. The YPG is comprised of a community of individuals who are service-minded and eager to make an impact. Members are able to participate in networking and social events, serve in leadership roles, and volunteer in meaningful service activities that help make a difference in the lives of disadvantaged children and their families.
