The Mission Continues: Military veterans come together in Houston to do good deeds
Everyday wisdom says that freedom is never free, its quest is ongoing, its virtues are nothing to be taken for granted.
Veterans have already and courageously served the country in active duty, but their impulses to lend assistance to others is far from over. Marshalled by The Mission Continues, an organization that mobilizes veterans so they can continue to use their talents in different ways, some 80 veterans from around the country reported for duty for three days of community volunteerism and leadership training this weekend.
Mayor Annise Parker welcomed the participants, who alongside volunteers from Shell and Boeing pledged to rebuild bleachers, plant new gardens, landscape grounds and remove an outdated performance stage at the Cristo Rey Jesuit College Preparatory School of Houston, an education center that strives to empower students to reach their full potential.
As part of The Mission Continues program, this project kicks off a six-month community service venture that includes volunteering with local nonprofits in the veterans' respective hometowns.
