NEW YORK — Are you an "innie" or an "outie?" That is the question as designers of spring 2014 collections have decided that the navel is the new hot body part.
What some designers offered the bare midriff look for fall, it will be a full-on trend come spring. Many designers at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week showed crop tops that expose the full midriff and navel, while some showed just a silver of midsection flesh. (FYI: About 90 percent of humans have a depressed navel ("innie") rather than one that protrudes ("outie.")

On the first full day of shows, Richard Chai and BCBG Max Azria featured crop top blouses with fitted pants and the trend didn't abate. Tommy Hilfiger and Daisy Fuentes showcased collections with a navel-baring California vibe; Fuentes featured crop tops paired with sarong skirts and track pants while Hilfiger featured colorful crops with orange short shorts and two-toned low-slung leather pants. Lacoste tweaked the look just a little with see-through mesh at the midriff.
Vera Wang and DKNY showed sporty collections featuring crops in neoprene or mesh fabric while hip labels like Rag & Bone showed midriff-baring crops under boyfriend jackets. Trendy designers like Proenza Schouler and Rodarte also joined the fray with edgy navel-baring looks.
While it's a sexy trend if you have 10 percent body fat, it's probably one of the most difficult looks for most women to pull off. Good news, however, ladies: You have around six months to get in shape before the crop tops are in stores.
