Houston power couple takes on New York as co-chairs of one of the city's most important galas
With Lone Star panache at the ready, Phoebe and Bobby Tudor are stepping outside their regular philanthropic playing field to take on the heights of New York society as they co-chair the New York Philharmonic Opening Night Gala in September.
The emails from Phoebe's computer went out earlier in the week inviting Houston friends and classical music lovers to join them in New York for the Sept. 25 evening. The enticements — a 90-minute concert featuring cellist Yo-Yo Ma in Lincoln Center's Avery Fisher Hall followed by a gala dinner in a festive party tent in the Lincoln Center plaza.
Touting the event as one of the first high-profile social events of the New York season, Phoebe emailed, "The guests always include a range of well-known attendees from business, society, government, and the arts. There is a lot of excitement around the evening and I think that you would really enjoy being part of it."
Joining the Tudors as co-chairs are New Yorkers Noreen and Ken Buckfire and Gabriela and Antonio Quintella, who divide their time between Sao Paulo, Brazil, and New York. Reaching beyond Manhattan borders, Phoebe explains, is an effort to build national and international support for the orchestra.
The New York Philharmonic connection with the Tudors began when Matthew VanBesientook over the post of executive director in January 2012. VanBesien had been Houston Symphony executive director and CEO when Bobby Tudor became symphony board president and a close friendship was forged.
In the communal art world of mutual support, Phoebe reports that the Houston Symphony is organizing a table for the evening. The Tudors chaired last winter's symphony ball and have been generous philanthropists across the city landscape with emphasis on Rice University and Hermann Park.
To join the Tudors and other well-heeled Houstonians on the gala evening, $1,500 per person, contact Jennifer Levine in the New York Philharmonic's office of special events at levinej@nyphil.org.
