    The happy designer: Trina Turk celebrates two decades of creating colorful prints that make you smile

    When fashion designer Trina Turk started a small womenswear collection 20 years ago, she never dreamed it would blossom into the iconic brand synonymous with prominent prints that's been embraced by women across the globe — particularly in Texas.

    "I just gravitated toward print and color from the beginning — it has really become part of our brand DNA."

    The contemporary ready-to-wear collection is sold at high-end department stores such as Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue. In addition, Turk has successfully opened nearly a dozen namesake boutiques (two in Houston — at The Galleria and The Woodlands Market Street) and expanded the collection to include swimwear, activewear, shoes, handbags, jewelry, menswear (designed by Turk's husband, Jonathan Skow) and home decor.

    Hailing from Palm Springs, California, Turk draws inspiration from her surroundings and continues to incorporate vivid hues and prints into her distinctive designs that appeal mostly to a customer who doesn't shy away from a bold statement. "I just gravitated toward print and color from the beginning — it has really become part of our brand DNA," says Turk, who creates all of her signature prints in-house.

    We sat down with the delightful designer, who made an appearance at her Dallas store to celebrate the 20-year milestone.

    CultureMap: What does 20 years of Trina Turk mean to you?

    Trina Turk: I never envisioned having 11 retail stores and all of these different categories. At the beginning, when I created a women's collection, I was thinking in a very focused way, and maybe I was a little conservative. The way it evolved was through the print and the color.

    CM: Where do you get inspiration for your signature prints?

    TT: We look at print all of the time. We look at studios from Europe, we work from vintage and we have two textile designers who develop our prints in-house. They are all signature prints. You won't see them from another brand.

    It's one of my favorite things to do: pick the prints, colors and fabrics for the collections. We do 11 collections per year — five or six different prints for every collection. Sometimes we revisit old prints and recolor them.

    "We are loving all of our kaftan styles; they are so versatile. It can go from casual to elegant, depending upon how you accessorize."

    CM: Tell us about the 20th anniversary collection.

    TT: We did special anniversary prints: Tahitian Floral and Egyptian Floral, for spring/summer ready-to-wear and swimwear. The Autumn Garden print will launch for holiday.

    CM: Style tips for a summer wardrobe revamp?

    TT: I always say don't be afraid of color. The Texas customer loves color. We are loving all of our kaftan styles; they are so versatile. You can wear them with white jeans, as a dress [or a] cover-up. It can go from casual to elegant, depending upon how you accessorize. We have them in silk, cotton, lace and swimwear versions.

    CM: Why do you think Texas embraces the brand so much?

    TT: I think that it's about this part of the country's love of color. The southern climates really lend themselves to wearing color. Also the customer in Texas is feminine and not afraid to look pretty.

    CM: How did you get into home decor?

    TT: We launched housewares in 2009 because people requested pillows in our signature prints. In Palm Springs — our original store — we showcase the brand's departments, including Mr Turk, Trina Turk residential, swimwear and ready-to-wear.

    CM: What's next?

    TT: We are working on sunglasses, which will launch in the near future. We are also looking to expand our retail locations to replicate our Palm Springs concept, to include all of the departments.

    Texas brand Lucchese launches UT Longhorns collection with boots and more

    Some styles come with a Longhorn logo front-and-center; others are more subtle.

    As of August 1, obsessive Longhorns fans have new collectible accessories to showcase their devotion. El Paso-based luxury bootmaker Lucchese has unveiled a new collection in collaboration with the University of Texas Athletics Department. Styles include boots with logos, subtler color-coded boots, a stadium-friendly bag, and even a ridiculously fancy football.

    For boots, the collection includes two men's styles and three women's styles, and all are mostly white or cream-colored with burnt orange accents. Both men's and women's styles have the option for a Longhorn logo, but only women get the more under-the-radar logo-less look.

    Here's a quick overview of the styles, which largely look similar with different silhouettes and accents:

    • The Bevo ($1,195): A men's boot with burnt orange full quill ostrich leather around the foot and cream leather up the sides. A Longhorn logo sits on the front.
    • The 40 Acres ($795): A boot with both men's and women's silhouettes, with a dark brown leather around the foot, cream or white leather up the sides, and a Longhorn logo on the front.
    • The Priscilla ($1,095) and Tilly ($695): Two silhouettes for women, featuring cream leather and elegant burnt orange stitching. The Priscilla is much taller.

    In addition to the boots, fans who need to consider stadium rules when packing a bag might consider the Stadium Shopper, a small, clear purse with a short handle and a detachable strap that is long enough to be worn crossbody. Ostrich leather ($895, or "cognac" leather in the less expensive variety, for $395) lines everything but the sides, with a mirrored-L logo stamped in.

    Finally, fans with $595 burning a hole through their clear purses can purchase a UT Exotic Football, which instead of the standard cowhide leather is wrapped in ostrich leather. It also includes both the mirrored-L and Longhorn logos in reflective gold, with a line that says "Official Sponsor of Texas Athletics" in all caps.

    “Lucchese is authentically Texan through and through, and there’s no brand more fitting to stand alongside the Longhorns,” said UT vice president and Lois and Richard Folger Athletics director Chris Del Conte in a press release. “What started as a great collaboration around boots has grown into something even bigger. It’s an exciting time to have them back as a sponsor and to keep that Texas-bred tradition alive in new ways.”

    These accessories can be purchased online, but there will also be several places to find them in person, including four Houston-area Lucchese stores. They'll be available at every Texas football home game from September through December. There will also be pop-ups at the Etter-Harbin Texas Exes Alumni Center (presumably for the same length of time), a gameday market called Big Bertha’s Bazaar on September 6, and the Bevo Blvd pre-game experience November 28.

    They're available just in time for passionate Longhorns to sport them at CultureMap's big fall sports bash, The Tailgate, taking place September 11 at 8th Wonder. Favorite Houston restaurants and chefs will serve up sports-inspired bites, and premium cocktails will keep guests hydrated as they meet-and-greet Texas sports legends, bid on memorabilia in a silent auction, and enjoy more game-day fun.
