The mental travails of the very famous Hemingway family were on the table and poignantly dissected at the Menninger Clinic annual signature luncheon at the Westin Galleria Hotel where the headliner was Acadamy Award-nominated actress Mariel Hemingway.
Best-selling author and researcher Brené Brown made a dual presentation with Hemingway who talked about her family's struggles with depression, addiction and suicide. Brown offered insights on family dynamics, individual vulnerability and the importance of living a full life. Their conversation was punctuated with clips from Hemingway's documentary Running From Crazy, which was produced by Oprah Winfrey.
“When you tell the truth, it is freedom like nothing else,” Hemingway said, acknowledging that her family never discussed their issues.
Lynda and David Underwood chaired the successful luncheon that brought in $600,000 which will benefit patient care, research, education and training programs at Menninger. Taking a bow on this day was luncheon honoree Ann Gordon Trammell, recognized for her contributions to Menninger and for her advocacy for mental health.
