    All That Sparkles

Why Houston's high society set sports this master jeweler's creations

Fine jewelry connoisseurs in Houston and around the globe know that when they want to sport something beautifully crafted and elegantly timeless, they go to Brian Gavin Diamonds.

Known as "Brian the Cutter," Gavin is a fifth-generation diamond cutter who's known for achieving unsurpassed visual balance in the gems that he shapes. He started Brian Gavin Diamonds in 2009 in response to the public's overwhelming demand for his work. Growing up, Gavin worked in his family's diamond factory in South Africa, one of the world’s leading centers for “ideal cut” diamonds.

Today he manufactures all his diamonds from Antwerp, the diamond capital of the world. His exquisite engagement ring collections, along with fully customized rings and custom jewelry creations, are sold in his Houston showroom and around the world online.

Perhaps his most famous creation is the signature Hearts and Arrows diamond, one of the world’s largest (8.10 carats!) and which Gavin set in an exquisite and unique rose gold setting. That unique gem inspired the 810 Collection, fine solitaire and halo engagement rings with an ornate, vintage style that recalls the Art Deco and Art Nouveau eras.

"We were inspired to create the 810 Collection because of the romance and glamor reminiscent of the Roaring ’20s," says Gavin. "The collection also responds to the current demand for more rose gold engagement ring options, which is also something that distinguishes this collection from other brands."

From the head, the band, and the shank type, nearly every part of each ring in the new collection is customizable. Although originally created in 18k rose gold, every piece in the 810 Collection can also be expertly rendered in 18k yellow gold, 18k white gold, or platinum.

The solitaire ring is available in four elaborate, low-profile, four-pronged heads which can be tastefully combined with three elegant shanks: simple, split shoulder, and twist. The shoulder of each band features just enough pave-set Signature diamond melee to boost the center stone with a line of shimmer, bringing even more emphasis to that already spectacular diamond.

The halo ring is an intricately crafted piece with Signature diamond melee of various sizes encircling a single, beautiful diamond. Choose from nine delectable halo designs in classic, geometric, and idyllic floral shapes. Each head features a corona of melee, which follow the flowing elements of the halo as it circles the main stone. This creates an aura of soft light around the large diamond, making it appear larger. The mounting of the halo ring consists of a smooth and slim traditional band, customizable in four stylish ways: the simple, classic single shoulder, which flows discreetly up to the head; the split shoulder; the cross, in which the head is held from below at four evenly spaced points; and the chic and modern twist.

Every piece in the Brian Gavin Diamonds 810 collection includes the option of choosing either the squared off Euro Shank, which prevents the ring from spinning on the finger, or the traditional Round Shank.

Not in the market for an engagement ring? Then consider Black by Brian Gavin, a collection which features diamonds cut with the patent-pending “Gavin Effect,” a calculated technique to maximize super light performance and optical precision. The collection features some of the rarest and most impeccably cut diamonds in the world and represents years of meticulous research and experimentation by Brian Gavin Diamonds in conjunction with the American Gemological Society (AGS) Laboratories.

Gavin discovered that most diamonds possess “low-intensity light zones,” where high-intensity light isn't captured, preventing even the most ideal cut diamonds from delivering optimal light performance. In response, the Brian Gavin Diamonds team set out to reach a new pinnacle of diamond cutting that would eliminate these zones, and in turn usher in a breakthrough in the light performance of diamonds. This new, proprietary cut enables light to be reflected off nearly the entire pavilion of the diamond, delivering a stunning optical performance and maximizing a sure sparkle.

The Black by Brian Gavin collection features diamonds with D through G colors and IF though VS2 clarities. All diamonds in the collection also feature Brian Gavin’s Signature Hearts and Arrows motif to ensure the diamond embodies the perfect marriage of sparkle, brilliance, fire and scintillation.

"This diamond collection is unlike any other in the world," says Gavin. “Black by Brian Gavin is truly the pinnacle of my career and is born from my relentless passion and obsession with diamonds with impeccable performance, exacting precision and incomparable beauty."

The Hana Solitaire and the Sirisha Necklace are the first Black by Brian Gavin commissions. The Hana is a 2.55-carat engagement ring with a Black by Brian Gavin D color and IF clarity rare type IIb diamond. The Sirisha necklace features 67 Black by Brian Gavin diamonds, weighing over 52 carats in a custom-built Rivera necklace set in platinum. Restrained in its approach and beautifully simple in its design, the necklace creates the illusion that the diamonds float above the body. The necklace was inspired by a father to give as a wedding gift to his daughter, who is the namesake of the necklace.

Gavin himself hand-delivered this one-of-a-kind creation to the customer on his daughter’s wedding day. In fact, Gavin tries to personally deliver all Black by Brian Gavin creations, and if he's unable to make it in person, then the jewelry arrives in unique packaging which matches the diamonds’ rarity.
