Oscar De La Rosa — frontman of the Grammy Award-winning Houston Tejano band La Mafia — is recovering at home this week after a brutal attack at a Montrose club that left the singer with severe lacerations on his face, missing teeth and possible eye damage.
Around 1:30 a.m. early Monday morning, De La Rosa and his driver were leaving the Blur Bar at 710 Pacific when the two were ambushed by a man who still remains at large. The driver was nearly punched out before the attacker went after the celebrated musician.
According to KHOU Ch. 11, the victims told police that the suspect asked to have his picture taken with De La Rosa inside the club earlier that evening. Much to the man's chagrin, the 53-year-old Tejano superstar denied the request.
After getting tossed out of the nightclub for a separate incident, the man spotted De La Rosa and the driver as they left the building. The suspect assaulted the two and fled on foot.
"The guy, from what I understand, is 6-feet and stocky and he sucker-punched the driver and Oscar," La Mafia keyboardist Armando Lichtenberger told reporters. "It happened so fast. The driver freaked and put him in the car and went to the emergency room."
The band's Facebook page reports that the assailant has been identified and that charges will be filed once he's located. As of Wednesday afternoon, however, the Houston Police Department tells CultureMap that no arrests have been made. An investigation led by HPD's assaults division is underway.
"He [De La Rosa] spent time with his mother for Mother’s Day," Lichtenberger said. "Then he just wanted to go out and have a good time."
La Mafia is cancelling a weekend concert in Atlanta while De La Rosa recovers from his injuries.
