Bike Killing Solved

Justice for a run over biker? Controversial hit-and-run killing finally results in an arrest

Tyler Rudick
Feb 5, 2014 | 2:39 pm

Following a two-month investigation, Houston police have arrested a 35-year-old Houston driver believed to be behind the hit-and-run death of cyclist Chelsea Norman on Waugh Drive in early December.

The Harris County District Attorney's Office has filed felony charges against Margaret Renee Mayer for crashing into the 24-year-old Montrose Whole Foods worker and not rendering aid — an incident that sparked a new wave of cycling activism across the city. Mayer, who was convicted for driving under the influence in 2002, now faces up to 20 years in prison.

According to court documents, a co-worker of Mayer's contacted Crime Stoppers with information in the days after Norman's death on Dec. 4.

Mayer said she got lost "somewhere on Waugh" and suspected that she hit someone.

The tipster said she was with the suspect at a bar in the hours leading up to the accident. Mayer contacted her the following day, describing how she was intoxicated after the bar meet-up and got lost "somewhere on Waugh." Judging from her car's shattered windshield, Mayer thought she hit someone but couldn't recall what had happened.

Investigators visited Mayer at work to inspect her vehicle — which showed most, but not all, of the damage described by the tipster. The suspect initially denied having done repair work to her car and again claimed that she was too intoxicated the night of the incident to remember any specific details. Authorities later secured surveillance footage showing Mayer's damaged car at a repair shop the day after the hit-and-run.

County investigators also spoke with Mayer's neighbor, who helped the allegedly intoxicated suspect call her mother "to notify her about the incident." The neighbor told authorities she "observed a 'gooey' yellow substance on the hood of the defendant's car" and also noticed "a piece of blue denim" attached to the vehicle. DNA evidence was taken from the car.

Further evidence against Mayer came from her brother, who happened to be in jail during the investigation. In a recorded jailhouse phone call to his mother on Dec. 4, he discusses the accident. The two refer to the defendant as "Auntie M" and describe how she hit a cyclist while driving under the influence, according to the police.

A Community Uprising

The fatal December accident served as a rallying point for the Houston cycling community, which hosted several events honoring Norman and raising awareness of how vehicles and bikes can share the road.

"This is complex and tragic story for everyone involved."

"This is a complex and tragic story for everyone involved," cycling activist Fab Ordonez tells CultureMap. While Ordonez says he hates to see someone face 20 years in prison, he feels the arrest is a step in the right direction for a city slow to prosecute motorists involved in cycling deaths.

Ordonez says that most American cities, Houston included, still treat cyclists as people choosing to engage in a risky and dangerous endeavor. He points to the Chronicle's recent review of fatal bike-car collisions, which showed that, since 2009, only four drivers have been charged in a total of 23 incidents

"As horrible as Chelsea's death has been for cyclists, it's helped to bring together a silent community," Ordonez says. "Let's hope this arrest will highlight how rarely hit-and-run drivers are punished . . . Let's hope it will push the authorities and the city."

Norman's death has sparked a wave of cyclist activism across the city.

Ryne Stanek and Jessica Peet have officially wed.

Houston Astros bullpen presence Ryne Stanek is living his best life. The 'Stros reliever/World Series champ just showed off his fielding prowess during the massive downtown victory parade, when a fan hurled a beer to him. The six-foot-four Stanek grabbed the brew, opened it, downed it, and slammed it down on the team float.

Stanek's fianceé Jessica Peet captured the moment on social media — noting that she was the designated driver.

Now, Stanek can add another unforgettable experience to his impressive list: wedding his beloved partner. He and Peet wed on November 12 in Bushnell, Florida. Their site on The Knot reveals some charming photos.

The happy couple were joined in Florida by Astros ace Lance McCullers, Jr. and wife Kara, as well as pitcher Ryan Pressly and wife Kat.

An Instagram fan favorite for their adorable photos, Ryne and Jess announced their engagement in March 2021. They are parents to a cherubic daughter, Joelle Layne.

This latest 'Stros news comes in a furious post-title season for the team. Team stars José Altuve, Alex Bregman, and Ryan Tucker met hundreds of fans last week at Academy Sports and Outdoors appearances. Slugger/playoff powerhouse Bregman also rocked the red carpet with dazzling wife Reagan at the CMA Awards.

And on November 14, as our news partner ABC13 reports, shortstop sensation and World Series MVP Jeremy Peña greeted lines of fans when he worked a drive-thru shift at a local Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers location.

Fertitta's newest purchase overlooks the ocean in Laguna Beach.

Devotees of Houston billionaire Tilman Fertitta's nationwide hospitality brands are in for a treat. The Billionaire Dollar Buyer has just secured an award-winning, 30-acre resort in sunny SoCal.

Fertitta has purchased the acclaimed Montage Laguna BeachResort Hotel, a premier, landmark beachfront property in the sunny, SoCal getaway destination. Notably, the Montage Laguna Beach Resort Hotel is one of only six hotels in the U.S. to score the Forbes Triple Five-Star hotel status. The Montage has also been included among Travel + Leisure’s Top Hotels in the World.

Fertitta's newest purchase overlooks the ocean in Laguna Beach.

“I am truly thrilled to acquire this world-renowned property and add one of America’s most iconic trophy resorts to our luxury hotel portfolio,” Fertitta noted in a statement. “I have been traveling to Laguna Beach for over 30 years. It is one of my favorite places to visit and one of the most beautiful areas in the world. The Montage is a stunning oceanfront property and one of the premier hotel brands in the world.”

Press materials didn't list the property purchase price, but Law360 reports that the deal is in excess of $660 million.

For the uninitiated, the craftsman-style resort sits on a coastal bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Impressive amenities are highlighted by the 20,000-square- foot Spa Montage, which offers eucalyptus steam rooms, dry redwood saunas, ocean air whirlpools, fireplace lounges, a state-of-the-art fitness center, a movement studio, and a lap pool.

More outdoor fun includes two pools and direct beach access; a museum-quality fine art collection; and more than 20,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor meeting space, per press materials.

Every resident space — the 260 guestrooms, including 60 suites, beach bungalow-style rooms, and multi-bedroom villas — boast stunning views of the Pacific.

Dining destinations offer chef-driven interpretations of coastal California flavors inspired by region. The property is designated and included in the distinctive Legend Collection of Preferred Hotels & Resorts Worldwide.

“We are thrilled that Tilman is the new owner of this one- of- a- kind property and welcome him into the Montage family,” said Alan Fuerstman, founder and CEO and Chairman of Montage International. Mary Rogers, the Montage's GM added, “The staff is thrilled to be working with Tilman. Everyone here at the property is tremendously excited about his purchase and look forward to continuing to provide a world-class experience to all of our guests."

Aside from his palatial Post Oak Hotel here in Houston (Texas’s only Forbes Double Five-Star hotel and spa), Fertitta also owns 14 other hotel properties around the country, including the award-winning San Luis Resort in Galveston, Texas, plus five popular Golden Nugget Casinos and Hotel locations.

Another feather in Fertitta’s luxury portfolio cap is the iconic and charming Huntting Inn, one of the most charming and historic locales in East Hampton, New York.

No stranger to California, Fertitta's presence there includes Catch Seafood and Catch Steak, Mastro’s Ocean Club and Mastro’s Steakhouse, Morton’s The Steakhouse, Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steakhouse, The Palm, and more — all part of his 60 unique brands and more than 600 concepts nationwide

Hot Heights Thai restaurant's owner set to open luxurious, artful new eatery in River Oaks

Lukkaew Srasrisuwan will open MaKiin next year.

The owner of a popular Thai restaurant will soon add a second concept to her roster. Kin Dee co-owner Lukkaew Srasrisuwan will open MaKiin next spring.

Located on the first floor of the Hanover River Oaks luxury high-rise, MaKiin will offer a more upscale experience than Kin Dee, which opened in the Heights in 2020.

Details on what exactly that means are still being worked out, but diners can expect a more luxurious environment and different dishes than Srasrisuwan’s first restaurant. Notably, Kin Dee chef Miranda Loetkhamfu is not involved in the project.

Named after a Thai phrase that translates as “come to eat,” MaKiin aims to offer a high level of hospitality. It will draw upon Srasrisuwan’s family history operating luxurious hotels, including the Khanom Golden Beach.

“I want to continue to share my love for authentic Thai cuisine with Houstonians, and am excited about the opportunity to bring a new concept to the dynamic Kirby corridor,” Srasrisuwan said in a statement. “With Kin Dee we showed Houstonians Thai food can be fun and vibrant. MaKiin will deliver a more elevated experience that will celebrate the artistry of my homeland’s authentic flavors, ingredients, and techniques.”

MaKiin will join other new arrivals in Upper Kirby such as Lulu’s, an Italian restaurants from Armandos owners Cinda and Armando Palacios that opened last year. Se7en, an ambitious, vibe dining concept, will open later this year in the Kirby Collection mixed-use development.
