Your weekly guide to Houston: Five (plus) don't-miss events — new dog park's buzzy debut included
On tap this week is a fruity shopping frenzy, the grand opening of a dog-lovers paradise, the beginning of a large-scale exhibition that celebrates an iconic Houston-born artist, an engaging performance about a boy named Peter and a loud competition with exciting music and choreography.
Urban Harvest's 15th Annual Fruit Tree Sale
The fruity frenzy attracts locavores from all over Houston as this Urban Harvest yearly sale includes a colossal number of trees in varieties that are specifically apt for the city's climate. Forget the guess work as gardening savants will be available to help first timers select the right tree to match your horticultural personality. If you're wondering, I am peachy kind of dude.
Tip: Score a copy of Bob Randall's book, Year Round Vegetables, Fruits and Flowers for Metro Houston, if you don't already have one. It's an indispensable vade mecum for all your gardening needs.
The deets: Saturday, 9 a.m.; Rice University Greenbriar Parking Lot; free event.
Johnny Steele Dog Park Grand Opening
During my early morning strolls around Buffalo Bayou Park listening to This American Life (and That American Life), I've witnessed first hand the transformation of this mud pit into a well thought out playground that's sure to become a fav destination for doggies and their owners. Johnny Steele Dog Park (watch CultureMap's exclusive video here) officially opens with a celebration that includes a four-legged fashion show, a dog look-alike contest, food, music, giveaways and the works.
If you stop by, say hello to happy gal Lily Jang of KHOU Channel 11, who will serve as emcee, and congratulate her on her recent engagement to hunky chef Kevin Bryant (and check out the rock on her finger).
The deets: Saturday, 1 to 4 p.m.; Johnny Steele Dog Park; free event.
Mel Chin: Rematch
In an unprecedented collaboration between four museums plus an accompanying exhibition at the Art League Houston, Mel Chin: Rematch is a comprehensive retrospective of the Houston-born artist that breathes new aesthetic life into his works. However the pieces on view may have been conceived, Chin says that it's time to revisit, reframe and rediscover his approach to creation.
The venture, organized by the New Orleans Museum of Art, is so exhaustive that a separate website was launched to detail the various exhibitions, talks, tours and family-friendly events.
River Oaks Chamber Orchestra and InterActive Theater Company present Peter and the Wolf
River Oaks Chamber Orchestra musicians are the bomb. InterActive Theater Company thespians know how to get an audience engaged. Putting them together on the same stage means that this version of Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf is set to be delightfully entertaining. As the program is held at the Houston Zoo, the performance is part of an initiative that educates about wolf conservation.
The deets: Sunday, 2, 3 and 4 p.m.; Houston Zoo; free with regular zoo admission.
14th Annual MLK Battle of the Bands Competition
This Show Bands of America musical feud is a high-decibel spectacle that pits award-winning high school show troupes against one another. Hailing from Arkansas, California, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas, the bands always put on performances that wow with exciting choreography and vibrant tunes, making this outing fitting for the whole family.
