Houston firefighters prepare for an emotional trip to New York to honor the 9/11victims
As Houston gears up for a weekend of remembering, honoring and volunteering, and Texas experiences epic wildfire outbreaks across the state, members of the Houston Fire Department Honor Guard are packing their bags to visit the epicenter of the 9/11 attacks for the 10th anniversary of Sept. 11th.
Warren Hooker, honor guard coordinator, described firefighters and first responders as a brotherhood.
"When one hurts, we all hurt ... We feel their pain," Hooker said Tuesday at the Houston Fire Museum in Midtown . "We want to take this opportunity to share with the New York Fire Department as they reflect back on that moment ... And to let the people of New York know that Houston cares, and the Houston Fire Department cares."
Seventeen members of HFD's Honor Guard have been charged with representing the City of Houston and the fire department in New York for the memorial events; included in the ranks is Houston firefighter Kevin Maynard, whose twin brother Keithroy perished in the attacks. The Honor Guard will participate in a ceremony for the families of those first responders who were killed in the line of duty — and they are prepared for a very emotional weekend.
"This trip is of historic proportions," HFD Honor Guard member Lary Batiste said. "We are going to make sure that we memorialize those firefighters that lost their lives, as well as the police officers and EMS."
