With diners more interested in healthy eating than ever before, they're increasingly turning to freshly-squeezed juices as a source of nutrition. A number of juice bars have popped up around town, and one has achieved enough success that its expanding to a second location.
Juice Girl owner Gretchen Todd announced this week that she's adding a second outpost in the former home of Flow at the corner of Fairview and Taft that will open in mid-October. In addition to Juice Girl's familiar juices and smoothies, the new shop's expanded footprint will allow Todd to add a number of new options, including herbal lattes and vegan meals.
Most importantly, Todd says she plans to open Houston's first vegan ice cream shop that will serve non-dairy scoops using a nut milk base. The shop will offer four to six flavors and incorporate them into classic treats like sundaes and banana splits.
"These products are all so creamy and delicious – people really love them and there’s nothing else like it in Houston," said Todd in a statement.
Until Juice Girl begins serving its frozen treats, people with an interest in dairy-free ice cream should consider the vegan sorbets at newly opened Amorino in River Oaks District. The signature rose-shaped cones are the city's current most-Instagrammable food item.
Meanwhile, patrons can find Juice Girl in its current home on 19th Street and at the Urban Harvest farmers market on Saturday.
Juice Girl will expand its juices and acai bowls to Montrose.
