Lunching for a cause
Gloria Steinem enthralls Women's Resource of Greater Houston luncheon audience with call for action
A sold-out, largely-female crowd packed the JW Marriott Houston ballroom for the 22nd Annual Luncheon of The Women's Resource of Greater Houston, where longtime feminist activist Gloria Steinem enthralled the enthusiastic audience with historical anecdotes about the women's movement and calls for action during her keynote address.
"I have no doubt that I would not be standing here today without her work and the work of other feminists," said Mayor Annise Parker, who attended the event with partner Kathy Hubbard.
Steinem, who discussed the importance of pay equity and money matters in a pre-event interview with CultureMap, praised The Women's Resource for providing financial education to nearly 30,000 Houston women since its start in 1990.
Executive director LaTanya Flix said that the event raised $230,000 for the organization.
Among the more than 700 guests were Sue Poretto, Iris Beatty, Patti Gras, Nancy Dodd, Janice Stooksberry, Joyce Lott, Rosine Matthews, Barbara Duganier and Ashley Grote. Also lunching for the cause were Carolyn Farb, Minerva Perez, Susan Bischoff, Sofia Adrogué, Kafi Slaughter and Y. Ping Sun.
