Get Spooky
Hip Midtown hangout adds a Halloween haunted house that's spooky fun
With Halloween weekend upon us, many Houstonians are looking for ways to indulge in some spooky fun with friends. Hitting up a haunted house always sounds like a fun idea, but high prices and long lines mean the reality doesn’t always match the hype.
Enter Axelrad Beer Garden. The hip hangout in Midtown has turned its upstairs into a haunted house that’s ready to scare visitors out of their hammocks.
Since most people go to Axelrad for the beer selection and cool vibes, anyone who buys a $10 ticket to the haunted house will be happy to learn that the price also includes a can of beer — choose from any of the $6 selections. Beer and Boos is quite a good combination, especially for those who need a little liquid courage before discovering what waits behind the doors of the haunted house.
Before I embarked on my experience, Axelrad co-owner Adam Brackman warned me that, “several people (and a dog) were so scared that they peed themselves while making their way through the house.” This prior knowledge wasn’t comforting, but I was determined to make it through without any mishaps.
Upon entering, I discovered that Brackman and his team have created a thrilling, scary theme that will frighten most people (see why that beer will come in handy). With inspiration from the recent movie It, this house features surprises waiting around every corner.
Fortunately, after a few screams, laughs, and frantically grabbing my friends by their hands, I made it out without any tears shed or needing a change of clothes. I will give you one piece of advice, however — watch your back.
Anyone looking for a scarily fun time at a great price should definitely head over to Axelrad. Their haunted house operates every night from 8 pm – 1 am through October 31. Once you’ve made it through the haunts, you’ll enjoy that beer so much more!
