Plans to preserve the property
Teas Nursery land sold to foundation
Bellaire residents worried that the lush grounds of Teas Nursery will be turned into a concrete canyon can breath easier. The Bellaire Examiner reports that the Jerry and Maury Rubenstein Foundation purchased the five-acre tract at 4400 Bellaire Blvd. for an undisclosed amount in order to preserve the site from redevelopment.
In business since 1843, Teas announced last month that it would cease operations in February, 2010, and put the property — one of the largest tracts of land inside the loop — on the market for a reported asking price of $8 million, leading to speculation it would be developed for luxury homes. But with the purchase, a spokesman for the Rubenstein family said the land will be donated to the city of Bellaire for "community use."
"There will be no housing on the property," Carlos Arcos of Vollmer Public Relations told the Examiner. "You can safely say that."
