All-American fashion reigns at Montrose's new Settlement Goods & Design
The locavore movement is no longer just about food. Montrose boutique Settlement Goods & Design opened Thursday with a commitment to selling only beautiful, American-made clothing, accessories and home goods.
Inside the spare, high-ceilinged space full of thick wooden furniture and industrial accents, racks and shelves are filled with well-made, natural-fiber clothing, subtly scented candles and perfumes, leather bags and belts, plush pillows, paper products, ceramics and jewelry.
"Rather than buying clothes and products from brands that make money off of exploiting cheap labor and materials, Settlement looks for manufacturers and designers that prefer to do business close to home," says the store's website. "It's our belief that these manufacturers and designers hold a greater amount of control over their labor practices, their environmental waste, and the quality of the products they produce."
With bites from Canopy and Ruggles Green and locally-crafted brews and bourbon, guests at Thursday's packed grand opening event took advantage of one-night-only discounts and all-American swag bags.
With the concept boutique two years in the making, owners Alicia Redman, Jenny and Gene Morgan warmly welcomed their guests, among them familiar faces, interested neighbors and curious passersby anxious for a peek.
The space, from the American flag front door to pivoting windows that overlook the store from the lofted upstairs office, feels simultaneously modern and hand-hewn, a balance of trendy and classic, perfectly in line with the store's self-described philosophy of "one foot firmly planted in the past, and the other in the future."
Settlement Goods & Design is open Tuesdays through Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
