John Legend brings sexy back to RodeoHouston & even Mayor Parker gets in on theaction
With a musical lineup that consists of wholesome country acts and Disney-esque proteges, RodeoHouston could use a little bit of risqué for one night. Friday night's entertainer, John Legend, added a much-needed R&B and soul addition to the mix.
Dressed in black western wear from head-to-toe (black boots, western-cut suit, shiny belt buckle and cowboy hat), Legend could've been mistaken for a country singer. With a confident entrance, he made his way to the center of the stage and launched into a rendition of Adele's "Rolling in the Deep." Legend stamped his signature sultry R&B sound on the No. 1 hit and provided a sneak peek of the variety and tricks he had planned for the rest of the night.
During "Slow Dance" he chose a lucky female audience member to join him on stage — making his many other admirers envious.
Even though the transitions between songs included a talented horn section, I thought the set could've done without the overuse of instruments. Luckily after the first quarter or so of Legend's set, the transitions seemed smoother as he stepped out from behind his piano and engaged the audience.

Legend also gave a sneak peek of his upcoming album due out in the summer with romantic and piano-driven tunes "Dreams" and "Tonight."
Other surprises included a country version of "Everybody Knows," a cover of Stevie's "Higher Ground," and "Greenlight," in which he jumped on top of the piano. During the romantic "Ordinary People," the audience sang the words, "Take it slow," along with him.
Legend's confident stage presence, perfectly timed falsettos and the immense Houston love from die-hard fans made the evening memorable. It was so romantically and sexually charged that one observer wondered if the singer was trying to ensure that a boom of babies named "John" or "Legend" arrive in Houston in about nine months.
I hoped for a track or two from Wake Up!, his recent collaboration with The Roots. But either way, Legend delivered an A-class set that very much pleased the ladies, including Mayor Annise Parker who viewed the show from a suite on the fourth level.
