Houston's 10th million-dollar gala of the year is no stuffy black-tie affair,instead the lunch lady sells
Just how high can the charitable fundraising go? It has been an amazing philanthropic numbers game in H-Town so far this year with CultureMap today chronicling the 10th benefit to reach, if not surpass, the seven-figure milestone.
Congratulations to supporters of Yellowstone Academy, who raised more than $1 million at the school's recent River Oaks Country Club gala.
In a creative twist on typical fundraising, a volunteer, aka "the lunch lady," circled the party space selling coupons to purchase meals for the students at Yellowstone.
Surprise, this was no black-tie extravaganza of fancy ball gowns and elaborate decorations, usually requisites for the big bucks fundraisers. Rather it was a gathering of solid citizenry dedicated to the concept of giving a hand up to children in the depths of poverty, particularly those living in the Third Ward.
With more than 500 guests participating, chairs Anne and Les Csorba and Stephanie and Frank Tsuru led the standing ovation for the evening's honorees — Kristi and David Lumpkins, who founded Yellowstone in 2001 as a faith-based private school for the poorest of the city's children.
