Nearly 2,000 screaming 'tweens and their moms showed up at the Sears store in Willowbrook Mall Saturday to catch a glimpse of modern pop culture phenomenons Kim, Khloé, and Kourtney Kardashian, who were in Houston to promote their spring 2013 Sears Kardashian Kollection.
The collection hasn't been much of hit at Sears, but that didn't seem to faze those who waited for hours to see the trio, who have recently returned from Mykonos, Greece, where they filmed episodes for the new season of their popular E! show, Keeping up with the Kardashians, premiering June 2.
I asked several of the girls waiting in line — they included those had driven in from Beaumont at 4 a.m. to snag a place in line and ecstatic Kinkaid high schoolers holding a poster with the words "I Love Big Butts and I Cannot Lie" — why they care about the Kardashians, and theses words kept coming up:
- Beauty
- Persistence
- Ambition
- Glamour
- and the four-letter word — Fame.
The sisterly triumvirate looked stylish, especially the diminutive Kim, as she was baby-bump radiating in her Givenchy gladiator heels and a black dress. Khloé, towering over her two sisters, appeared to be a favorite among 200 lucky fans who were guaranteed autographs with a purchase from the collection.
Having had just about every moment of their lives filmed in front of a camera, the sisters, naturally, looked at ease as cell phone cameras flashed. One can admire what they have achieved in the past six years while remaining a tight nuclear family. But, I wonder, can they enjoy their lives when the cameras stop?
I can securely speak for my generation when I say that we are over the Kardashians because as the world moves faster and faster, there is a universal sense of keeping it more real, honest, and connected.
But I'll admit that what the sisters have achieved — receiving millions of dollars for endorsing everything from nail polish remover to pillows to candles to shoes to jewelry to diet products — is just a small slice of some people's "American Dream," and deserves recognition.
The Kardashians love, feud, and continue to support one another along the way, and make it look fun and easy.
It's how they have managed to do it, with what appears to be no emotional connection or bond to what they endorse (plus Kim's infamous sex tape), that irks many people. They seem to have sold their soul to easily-influenced consumers who really do believe that everything they wear, own, and endorse is as fabulous as the sisters themselves.
But the audience at Willowbrook had no complaints. Some fans were crying in line while some reporters were tweeting in capital letters that they had hugged the sisters.
One fan tweeted, "I have no idea how I took pictures. My hands were shaking seeing the #Kardashians. Great experience right?"
